Carolyn M. Brunner, retired nurse

August 10, 2018

Carolyn M. Brunner, 93, of Newark passed away Monday, Aug. 6, 2018, at Christiana Care Health Systems. She was born in East Lansdowne, Pa., Dec. 28, 1924, and raised in Sussex County, daughter of the late William E. and Sadie W. Powell.

Carolyn trained as a nurse at Delaware Hospital in Wilmington during World War II, then was a school nurse at John M. Clayton High School before moving to Newark. She later earned her BS/RN at Wilmington College. She retired from a 20-plus year career as school nurse at Downes Elementary School in Newark. Carolyn was a longtime member and volunteer at the Newark Welfare Committee and a member of the Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church.

She enjoyed playing the piano and leading many sing-along events throughout her adult life. She also enjoyed reading and was active in her neighborhood bridge club. More than anything, she cherished the time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carolyn was a loving and devoted wife, mother and friend.

In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her two husbands: Harry W. McCann in 1949, and H. Richard Brunner in 1999; and her daughter, Rebecca McCann, also in 1999. She is survived by her sons: Daniel McCann of Newark, James Brunner of Bluffton, S.C., and Gerald Brunner of Newark; her six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be announced later. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Ocean View.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her memory to the Ocean View Historical Society, P.O. Box 576, Ocean View DE 19970.
