Carrell Joseph 'CJ' Watson, loved sports

January 5, 2015

CJ (Carrel Joseph) Watson, 31, passed suddenly, but peacefully in his sleep, at his home in Harbeson, Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014, from undetected medical problems.

CJ was born in Lewes, Feb. 7, 1983. He grew up in Georgetown where his home was an open-door, everyone welcome sort of place, always full of friends and fun. He ran cross-country and track and played varsity basketball at Sussex Central High School. After graduating in 2001 he attended Goldie-Beacom College. He worked at a variety of jobs including 15 years with Lingo businesses.

CJ lived and breathed sports, especially basketball. His love of sports and events like Slam Dunk to the Beach lead him to start a web-based, sports-related business, PremoHoops Recruiting, with Daniel Premo. Daniel was like a big brother to CJ and Daniel’s parents, Jeff and Linda Premo, treated him like a son.

CJ knew how to connect with people and stay connected. He was like family with so many people, such as Eddie Henry, his son Dylan Henry and Scott Peck. He remained close friends with his ex-girlfriends Susan and Amanda. After Amanda and CJ parted, he continued to spend his free time with her daughter Jacey and her cousins. His love and commitment to Jacey endured. She meant the world to him.

Kindness was fundamental to CJ. People knew he would lend a hand. He was active with the Good Ole Boys Foundation where he utilized his talent for videography and aerial photography using drones. To paraphrase Josh Wharton of the foundation, who put it very well: Sadly, CJ’s life was short, but in his short life he did more to help others than many people do in much longer lifetimes. His was a life well-lived, a life of good works, a life to be proud of.

CJ was a devoted son, a dedicated and dependable friend who gave generously of his time, energy and good spirits. He was an all-round fun guy who enjoyed traditions such as Punkin Chunkin. CJ will be remembered for his outgoing good nature and his fun-loving sense of humor as his wide circle of friends gives clear testimony. He’s gone too soon and will be sorely missed.

CJ is survived by his mother, Nancy Jean Watson; his brother, Paul Richard Watson of Georgetown, and Jaycee Lancaster, the child of his heart, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends too many to count. He was preceded in death by his father: Carrel Odell “D.C.” Watson Jr., of Wisconsin; and his grandmothers, Mary Jane Casselberry and Vivian Watson.

Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown. A funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 9, at noon, in Wesley U.M. Church, 102 E. Laurel St., Georgetown. Burial will immediately follow at Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Good Ole Boys Foundation, 25596 Asbury Road, Seaford, Delaware, 19973. Contributions will be used to establish a college fund for Jaycees in CJ’s honor.
