Castles in the Bay

January 23, 2017

Krista Scudlark of Milton submitted this interesting photograph. “A few weeks ago - on New Year’s Day - my husband and I took a late afternoon walk at Fowler Beach,” said Scudlark. “It was the first time we had been there since the breach was fixed. It was low tide, and we were happy to see that some of ‘nature’s sand castles’ had survived the dredges and bulldozers.

“These awesome structures are built by marine sand-builder worms. They form colonies or reefs in the shallow intertidal areas of estuaries, like the Delaware Bay. We have seen quite a few of them between.”
