Catholic Charities receives grant from Walmart Foundation
Catholic Charities Inc. announced that it is again the recipient of a grant from the Walmart Foundation, provided through Catholic Charities USA, that will enable Catholic Charities to expand its efforts throughout Delaware and the nine counties of the Eastern Shore of Maryland to educate families about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and provide eligible families with enrollment assistance.
“We are thrilled to receive the continued support of Catholic Charities USA through the Walmart Foundation for this vital work throughout the Diocese of Wilmington,” said Richelle A. Vible, executive director of Catholic Charities. “Hunger endangers all members of a family, but especially young children and seniors, putting them at risk for poor school performance, poor work performance, and poor physical and emotional health.
"Many residents in Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore are struggling to purchase wholesome food for their families. Resources to help meet these needs are drying up, but need continues to increase. Over the past three years, our outreach efforts and enrollment assistance may have made the difference for the most vulnerable in our communities between going hungry and having a reliable source of nutritious foods.”
According to data from Foodshare, SNAP is one of the most effective and efficient ways to end hunger. This critical program provides many needy individuals with the ability to provide nutritious and healthy meals to their families. Unfortunately, a number of families eligible for this benefit are not aware of this critical resource. More than 35 percent of the Diocese of Wilmington households are eligible for SNAP benefits. Support from the Walmart Foundation will help Catholic Charities to enroll all eligible households through outreach and enrollment assistance.
