Celebrate Mother's Day at Lewes Farmers Market May 12

May 9, 2018

This Saturday, May 12, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market opens at 8 a.m., at George H.P. Smith Park, at Johnson and Dupont avenues, with lots of potted plants and flowers to help celebrate moms on their special day. In addition to flowers and plants, the 34 vendors will be bringing juicy strawberries, freshly cut asparagus, lettuces and greens, eggs, cheese, yogurt, milk, grass-fed pork, beef, and lamb, fresh oysters, and much more.

At 9 a.m., Jennifer Noonan, children's librarian from the Lewes Public Library, hosts Children's Story Time at the Market by reading “Growing Vegetable Soup” by Lois Ehlert. Just under 8,900 children and their adults have come to Children's Story Time at the Market since this partnership program between the HLFM and the Lewes Public Library began in 2008.

Chef Mary Gaffney from A Different Kitchen at Paynter's Mill in Milton (Route 1 and Cave Neck Road) will delight all with a demonstration with an Asian fusion twist - sure to please all moms! Her demo is set for 10 a.m. Gaffney began working in the Rehoboth restaurant scene in 1999, most recently at The Back Porch Café where she learned the art of developing flavors, and the skills required for various cooking techniques and handling food with integrity and respect.

This year, the market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the market. WIC will also be accepted at the market starting in June.

A few Hoedown tickets are still available for the best party this spring - but one needs to act quickly to secure a ticket. The event takes place at the Officer's Club at the Cape Henlopen State Park at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, May 12. The evening includes a farm-to-table dinner created by Executive Chef Bill Clifton from Henlopen City Oyster House, an open wine and beer bar, dancing to the live music of the Federal Street Band, and much more. Tickets are available at www.historiclewesfarmersmarket.org. Call 302-644-1436 for more information.

The market is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Ample parking can be found at the Shields Elementary School and Lewes School parking lots (intersection of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive), a short walk to the market

In case of inclement weather, the market moves to Shields Elementary School parking lot.

The HLFM will help customers carry bags back to the school parking lots. This service is located at the HLFM Information Tent.
