For the first time in almost two years, the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce hosted a general membership meeting Sept. 14 at Kings Creek Country Club. It was the chamber’s first general meeting since January 2020.

Prior to the start of the meeting, as chamber members were enthusiastically saying hello to their fellow business owners, Chamber President and CEO Carol Everhart said it was good to have people back together.

The meeting began with the chamber honoring a number of businesses that had marked milestone anniversaries in 2021 – 60 years for Funland; 50 years for Nicola Pizza; and 40 years for Ad Boat, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Gallo Realty and Blue Moon Restaurant.

Leadership Delaware CEO Jennifer Cohan, former Delaware Department of Transportation secretary, was the guest speaker. She made the pitch for her organization by saying it takes the state’s best and brightest, and makes them exceptional.

There’s a definite need for the manual labor workforce, but there’s also a need for employees who can immediately step into management roles, said Cohan. It’s a tough program to get into, but it does open doors, she said.

Following the Leadership Delaware presentation, the chamber closed the lunch by announcing a contest to name the new Sea Witch balloon. The four names people can choose from are Hilda, Matilda, Gertrude and Ursula.

After decades of service, the previous balloon probably wasn’t going to make it down Rehoboth Avenue again, said Everhart.
