Changes needed along Route 1 corridor

June 2, 2023

I am writing regarding the three horrible accidents by the intersection of Route 1 and Cave Neck Road in the last few weeks. Obviously something must be done quickly to stop any further accidents.

What can be done quickly with the resources we have? Could we not have police patrol before or near this intersection? Having lived in Wilmington for 22 years and now Milton for four years, I make frequent trips back and forth to visit family, friends, appointments and shopping. I travel with the Waze app and know the spots along the way where police are usually present, which slows traffic down. It would help with speeding if we also had police presence on this stretch of Route 1. In the Dover area and north, there are medians to separate the northbound and southbound lanes. Can we not start the process of also getting those from Milton through Rehoboth? This would have stopped one of the accidents that went across the median. Of course a light at the Cave Neck Road intersection would help. I’m not sure why it seems DelDOT is against lights there. Could the traffic speed go down to 45 mph on Route 1 from Milton to Lewes? We know people will exceed that speed, but it may help.

Having personally been in a car accident where a woman ran a red light and totaled my car and also having a close family member killed in an auto accident, I feel the need to write this letter. Something needs to be done soon or more tragic accidents will happen in this dangerous section of Route 1.
