Charles Pritchard, proud veteran

Charles “Buddy” Pritchard, 79, of Lewes, passed away peacefully early Thursday morning Jan. 5, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Charles was born Nov. 15, 1943, in Wilmington. He grew up in Old New Castle and attended St. Peter’s and Salesianum schools. 

He enlisted in the military and served in the Active Guard Reserve assigned to the Delaware National Guard. During his over 32 years of service, he achieved the rank of chief warrant officer 4 and retired as an honorary chief warrant officer 5. He was awarded many medals including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Delaware Conspicuous Service Cross, along with many other accolades. 

He enjoyed traveling with his wife and visited many beautiful countries on five continents across the world and 45 of the 50 United States. Italy was definitely his favorite destination and on one of those visits, he was able to spend time with some of his Italian family. His biggest enjoyment in life was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially during their holiday gatherings.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Sr. and Catherine “Kitty” Pritchard; his sister, Janice Hare; and nephew, Jeremy Hare. 

He is survived by his wife of 58 loving years, Kathryn “Kay” Pritchard; his daughter, Michelle (Mark) Heck, his son, Brian Pritchard (Cher); and three grandchildren, Mark (Karen), Erika (Kenny), and Brittany (Brian). His great-grandchildren, Holly and Connor, were the light of his life.

Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 11, at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in New Castle. Interment will be held privately at a later date.
