From founding the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice to leading the Delaware League of Women Voters and serving on countless local and state boards, Lewes resident Charlotte King has committed decades of her life to amplifying the voices of others. Her leadership is about change — real, tangible progress for communities that have been historically underserved.
King’s service spans many sectors, including mental health, education, public policy, racial justice and civic engagement. A licensed clinical social worker and retired social service administrator, King has provided critical support to children and families through Delaware Guidance for Children. Her work on commissions like the Delaware Criminal Justice Council and the Cape Henlopen School District’s Community Minority Liaison Commission illustrates her dedication to systemic change.
And she has never limited herself to just one cause or one organization. Whether volunteering at Beebe Healthcare, marching for women’s rights in Sussex County or advising community land trusts, King is a constant presence in the Cape Region.
So it’s not only fitting, but also past time King was honored for her tireless efforts. We’re pleased to see King’s work will be highlighted on the statewide stage with her induction into the 2025 Delaware Women’s Hall of Fame. She joins an elite group alongside Valerie Biden Owens, Claire DeMatteis and Charlotte Miller-Lacy — all women who have made a profound mark on Delaware. But King’s contributions are especially rooted in grassroots leadership and the power of local action, attributes for which the Cape Region has become well known.
Gov. Matt Meyer summed it up perfectly when honoring the four women inducted this year.
“The Delaware Women’s Hall of Fame honors incredible Delawareans who have led with courage, vision and a deep commitment to others. Their impact is felt across the state — in our communities, in public service and in the lives they’ve touched. We’re proud to honor their legacy and thank them for their continued leadership.”
