Charlotte King up for Delaware Women’s Hall of Fame

August 5, 2025

Lewes resident Charlotte King is one of four 2025 inductees for the Delaware Women’s Hall of Fame.

Fifty nominations were received this year by the Office of Women’s Advancement and Advocacy, a division of the Delaware Department of Human Resources, and the Delaware Women’s Hall of Fame Committee, which chose the four women based on contributions that have made a lasting impact on the state.

“The Delaware Women’s Hall of Fame honors incredible Delawareans who have led with courage, vision, and a deep commitment to others,” Gov. Matt Meyer said in a press release. “Their impact is felt across the state – in our communities, in public service, and in the lives they’ve touched. We’re proud to honor their legacy and thank them for their continued leadership.”

In addition to King, the committee selected Valerie Biden Owens, Joe Biden’s sister, who worked on his campaigns for decades, and now serves as chair of the Biden Institute and is a national advocate for women’s leadership and public service; Claire DeMatteis, a Delaware attorney who has served as senior advisor to three Delaware governors, served as senior counsel to then-U.S. Sen. Joe Biden, and has worked in all three branches of state government; and Charlotte Miller-Lacy, founder and national executive director of I Am My Sister’s Keeper and the MSK Community Center.

King is the founder, a board member and chair emeritus after serving as chair for eight years for the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice. A graduate of St. John's College Annapolis and Fordham University School of Social Work, King is a licensed clinical social worker and retired social service administrator.

King served two terms as president of the Delaware League of Women Voters, was a member of the Delaware Commission for Women for over four years, and her community service on boards/commissions includes First State Community Action Agency, Lewes Historical Society, West Rehoboth Community Land Trust, Women's March Sussex County, The Way Home, Speak Out Against Hate, Nassau School Coalition and Community Minority Liaison Commission for the Cape Henlopen School District and the Delaware Criminal Justice Council.

King also provided mental health services to children and families served by Delaware Guidance for Children, and she has volunteered at Beebe Healthcare, St. Peter's Church, St. George's Chapel, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and she is an honorary commander of Delaware State Police Troop 7. Her awards include the Kandler Award by Delaware ACLU, Jefferson Award, Common Cause Award, and Mitchell Award by Stonewall Chapter Sussex County.
