The Overfalls Foundation held its first summer children’s event June 12 at Lewes Canalfront Park.
Intended for kids 5 to 13, the program provided introductory lessons on fishing. Volunteers highlighted fishing etiquette, how to bait a hook, how to retrieve and release fish, and offered local resources for up-and-coming fishing enthusiasts.
The event began with remarks from Dave Shook, president of the Overfalls Foundation. Shook outlined the day’s proceedings and emphasized additional events held by the foundation throughout the upcoming summer months.
After receiving bait and rods for those who did not bring their own, kids and their guardians took to the banks of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal. Later, volunteers also held a fishing accuracy test for interested participants.
The program was supported by volunteers from the Overfalls Foundation and Sea Scouts, as well as through partnerships with the Friends of the Canalfront Park, the Lewes city dockmaster, Breakwater Bait and Tackle, and Delaware Paddle Sports.
This event was the first in a series of summer programs for children held by the foundation. The event set for Wednesday, July 16, will focus on sailing. Kids over the age of 5 will be treated to a tour of three of the fastest yachts in Lewes, meet experienced sailors and learn how to rig sails while racing.
The event set for Wednesday, Aug. 13, will teach children knots and their uses on vessels like the Lightship Overfalls.
All programs will be held at 10 a.m. and begin at Lewes Canalfront Park.
