Cinema Cabaret series offers 'Julie and Julia' March 9

Reservations due by March 6
February 24, 2012

Rehoboth Beach Film Society's Cinema Cabaret, a series combining fine dining and first-rate films, returns in a new location, Irish Eyes in Lewes.  The Friday, March 9 event features "Julie & Julia," starring Meryl Streep, the most Oscar-nominated actor in history, as Julia Child, one of the most acclaimed television chefs of all time.

Audiences will partake in a delicious, three-course meal inspired by Child, who introduced French cooking to America. Serving begins at 6 p.m., and the film screening begins after desserts are served.

"Few movies are as delightful as 'Julie & Julia,'" proclaims Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle.  This humorous and uplifting biography tells not one, but two true stories of two extraordinary women. The film adapts and combines Julia Child's memoir, "My Life in France" with "Julie & Julia," Julie Powell's record of her self-imposed challenge to cook all 524 recipes in Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" in one year while charting the process in an online blog.

Although the two women never met, their lives are intertwined in the film. Both women are searching for purpose in their lives, craving to do something worthwhile. Obstacles such as language barriers, chauvinism and terrifying live lobsters cannot deter either woman. Ultimately, each discovers that with the right combination of passion, fearlessness and butter, anything is possible.

A  French menu will be served, starting with a cup of French onion soup. The entrée choices are chicken Cordon Bleu with Brie cream sauce or striped pegasus (fish filet) with sauce. Both are served with butternut squash and spinach casserole topped with creme fraiche. Dinner concludes with a dessert of poached pear in riesling dessert wine drizzled with chocolate ganache. Seating is required by 6 p.m. to avoid film disruption.

Irish Eyes is at 213 Anglers Road in Lewes. Admission to Cinema Cabaret is $34 (nonrefundable) and includes film, three-course meal with coffee or soda, and dinner gratuity. Alcoholic beverages are not included. Reservations must be purchased by noon, Tuesday, March 6. For reservations, call the film society at 302-645-9095, Ext. 1, or go to rehobothfilm.com. Have entree selection ready when making reservations.
