Claymont man, 22, faces charges after fatal bicycle crash near Milton
A Claymont man, 22, faces charges July 26 following a fatal bicycle crash on Sand Hill Road near Milton.
The crash happened about 7:39 a.m., police said, as Tahrie Calloway was driving a 2017 Honda Accord northbound on Sand Hill Road approaching Burton Road near Milton. At the same time, police said, a bicyclist was traveling along the east edge of northbound Sand Hill Road when he was struck by the Honda and thrown into the grass. The bicyclist, 67-year-old Sylvester Person of Milford, was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Honda did not stop, but police said Calloway was found with the disabled car about a mile north of the crash. According to court records, an emergency responder stopped and saw Calloway near the Honda, which had damage to the front right bumper, wheel-well and windshield. Calloway told the emergency responder that he struck a log after trying to avoid a crash with a tractor-trailer, records state. The emergency responder then saw Calloway wipe blood from the car with his T-shirt, records state.
Police said Calloway was driving under the influence, and court records state, an officer smelled marijuana and alcohol, and noticed marijuana debris on Calloway’s shirt. His blood alcohol sample read 0.124, above the legal limit of 0.08. Calloway was taken to Troop 4 where he was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, tampering with physical evidence, leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death and inattentive driving. Calloway was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $18,101 cash bond.
The roadway was closed for about three hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
