Commending Lewes for beach recycling program

August 19, 2025

I wish to commend the City of Lewes for its initiation of a pilot program for recycling on the beach. We actually started a program at the beach entrance by the Lewes Yacht Club eight years ago. The city was not recycling anymore because people were not cooperating, instead commingling trash and recycling.

Our program involved taking the city residential bins and cutting holes at the top (supplied by the city) that only allowed bottles and cans. We also installed a hasp and padlock so the lid could not be opened for people to be tempted to add trash. The bins were clipped to the same post as the city trash bins. We would then roll out the recycling bins to the street on Monday evenings for the usual Tuesday morning pickup by the city. The community was very responsive and fully cooperated. During the season, we would fill two recycling bins a week.

For the project to be successful, someone needs to take ownership. It looks like the city has taken this first step. Good luck, but I am sure the project will be successful.
