Conference serves as springboard for author Wilma Caraway

Book signing Dec. 12 at Family Christian Bookstore
December 10, 2015

When Wilma Caraway registered for the recent East Texas Christian Writers Conference, she didn’t know that it would spark a public relations campaign featuring her award-winning book.

Dr. Jerry Hopkins, director of the conference and a history professor at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas, wrote a full-length article about her book that appeared in the Marshall News Messenger. Hopkins said, “Wilma has compiled one of the most unique and inspiring books of sayings, titled '101 Surprises! Sayings with Scriptures You Didn’t See Coming.' This attractive book, chosen as the Christian Small Publisher Book of the Year in 2014, is designed and produced as a gift book, but it is also a book that you can use in your personal reading and devotional life. The combining of sayings and Scripture is one of the unique and inspiring collections of quotes and sayings. This reasonably priced inspirational volume will serve as an encouragement and motivation to speak and share wisely and thoughtfully. Linking Scripture with often-used sayings and quotes brings together influential and persuasive ideas.”

In addition to Hopkins’ article, Ryan Wagoner, a reporter for the Marshall News Messenger, also interviewed Caraway and wrote a feature article that was published in the religion section. He said, “For some followers of the Christian faith, regularly reading the Bible can be a daunting task, but for Marshall native Wilma Caraway, it’s more like a hunt. The sayings in '101 Surprises!' range from inspirational ones like ‘Go the extra mile,’ which is similar to Matthew 5:41, to widespread phrases like ‘What goes around comes around,’ which resembles Obadiah 1:15.”

This unexpected publicity resulted in exposure for the book and increased sales. It turns out that when people see the book, it basically sells itself, as can be attested by Chardon’s Fine Jewelry and the Nutter Marvel Carriage Museum in Georgetown, Heritage Jewelers in Seaford, and The Mustard Seed and Allison’s CardSmart in Milford.

On Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Caraway will be at the Family Christian Bookstore in Salisbury, Md., for a book signing. With her will be Jean Davis, author of "Happy Birthday, Jesus, and Other Things I Can’t Say," and "Slices of Life: Couch Potato Pie." Caraway and Davis will also have autographed books by members of Delmarva Christian Writers’ Fellowship and Kingdom Writers Fellowship: Candy Abbott, Gail Atlas, Betty Kasperski and Eva Maddox.
