Connecting sister cities with the Gazette

April 22, 2026

Peggy and Michael O’Malley traveled to Hoorn, Holland, to visit Lewes’ sister city and the historic Waag, the 1609 weigh house whose architecture inspired the Zwaanendael Museum. The Waag served merchants during Hoorn’s Golden Age, and its distinctive design later became the model for the Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes, built in 1931 to commemorate the first Dutch settlement in Delaware.  Both cities preserve their shared Dutch story through museums that honor their early explorers and settlers from opposite sides of the ocean.
