Conversation Peace Jewelers opens in Lewes
A new jewelry store in Lewes has gotten people talking.
Conversation Peace Jewelers opened in Lewes in May, with jeweler Ingrid Handle at the helm. For 32 years, Handle operated a Long Island jewelry store before selling the business to a former employee.
Handle says she discovered Lewes by accident. First her aunt moved to the area, then her mother followed soon after.
“While helping my mother find a home, I fell in love with it here,” she said. “So I developed a plan.”
Handle and husband Sam vacationed in Lewes for three years before they moved permanently in 2017.
“I thought, this area was really missing a jewelry store that also offers repair service, and you don’t even have to go on Route 1,” she said.
Handle designed the store’s interior to be welcoming and open, with displays arranged throughout to encourage browsing, rather than rows of glass-topped display cases typically seen in jewelry stores.
Inventory ranges from jewelry crafted locally with sterling silver and beach glass to glittering diamond engagement rings and wedding bands, shiny pearls and gleaming men’s watches. She also offers antique estate cameo and art deco necklaces and rings. Coastal-themed pieces include jewelry made from Lewes and Rehoboth beach sand, and sailor-designed woven rope bracelets.
Services include watch repair and battery replacement, jewelry repair and free cleaning, appraisals by appointment, and ear piercing.
A small art gallery at the rear of the store offers paintings, plates and other works by American artist Edna Hibel.
Handle prioritizes cultivating relationships with her customers through honesty and professionalism, which she says has already led to repeat customers.
During the summer, the store will hold Sunday sidewalk sales from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
