Cool runnings in Rehoboth for 32nd annual Father’s Day 5K

Lots of fathers and children embedded in race results
June 22, 2022

A breezy coolness greeted 252 runners June 19 for the 32nd running of the Father’s Day 5K in Rehoboth Beach. The weather felt like November in June for a race that has a history of being stale-air hot.

“The weather for the three weekend races was so different,” said Martin Rodriguez, who was cart man for the three events. “Friday night was just hot, Saturday morning was really windy, and Sunday was unseasonably cool.”

What was most cool was lots of children – both young and adult – running with their dads.

Dylan Smiley, 24, was overall winner in 15:49, which is a 5:06-per-mile pace. Alyssa Brinsky, 20, of Middletown was the women’s overall winner in 19:31.

Vincent Derocco, 55, won the male masters race in 17:28, while Paula Pels, 54, was the female masters winner in 22:22.

Augustus Bowles, 9, won the male 9-and-under age group in 23:39. Cameron Hastings, 8, won the female 9-and-under category in 27:00.

Julian Snell, 12, won the 10-13 male age group in 24:08, while Shiloh O'Grady, 12, won the female side in 23:16.

Some Father’s Day family combinations included Trent Sewell, 25, 19:05, and Mike Sewell, 52, 19:38; Sean O’Grady, 40, 23:15 and Shiloh O’Grady, 12, 23:16; Ayden Vanderwende, 17, 22:10, and Breck Vanderwende, 48, 23:24; Donald Anderson, 57, 35:40, and Meghan Anderson, 22, 35:42; Kevin Shea, 49, 36:34, and Dylan Shea, 8, 36:35; and David Eynck, 59, 47:47, and Elias Eynck, 21, 47:47.
