Corin Roth of Georgetown earns Girl Scout Gold Award
Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay presented the Girl Scout Gold Award to Corin Roth from Girl Scout Troop 1326, Georgetown. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award given in the organization, and Corin was one of only six girls chosen from among the entire Chesapeake Bay Council.
The daughter of Dustin and Lisa Roth, Corin earned her Silver Award in 2018 and her Bronze Award in 2015. Corin has been a Girl Scout for 13 years, having started when she was in kindergarten.
Corin graduated from Sussex Central High School June 1. At Central, Corin was an International Baccalaureate student, enrolled in the Sussex Central Teacher Academy, president of the Educators Rising Club, a four-year member of the Golden Knights Marching Band and Concert Band, and a member of the FFA. Corin loves being out in nature, whether she is hiking, kayaking, going to the beach, catching little toads or working on her flowerbeds.
Corin plays the clarinet and bass clarinet, and has a passion for music and the arts. As a member of marching band, she noticed membership was dwindling in the music department due to incoming music students thinking they had to choose between the music program and other extracurricular activities. That’s when she came up with her original project idea to allow incoming eighth- and ninth-graders to attend a week-long mock junior band camp where they would learn how to march, play music and practice part of the field show, with an end-of-camp performance. She presented her idea to her mentor and Music Director Ben Ables and he was on board.
When COVID hit, her original plans had to be changed in order to meet her project deadline. With help from some Golden Knights Marching Band members, Corin created an instructional video of what band camp was like. She also conducted interviews of other band members talking about what they enjoyed most about band and some of their other their activities. While her project was not what she had originally planned, Corin’s passion and love for the music department shined through.
In order to earn the Gold Award, girls must complete a Take Action Project that requires a minimum of 80 hours, along with one Girl Scout Journey if they have earned their Girl Scout Silver Award, or two journeys if they have not. Girls are to choose a project that is meaningful to them and is sustainable. Only 5.4% of eligible Girl Scouts earn their Gold Award.
Corin will be attending Lycoming University this fall, majoring in ecology, education and STEM. She plans to become a science teacher and continue with Girl Scouts as a volunteer with Troop 1326 and a troop close to her college.
