Cover crop cost-share applications due July 26

June 21, 2024

The Sussex Conservation District is accepting applications for its cover crop cost-share program and cover crop referral program through Friday, July 26.

The district’s cover crop program provides farmers with up to $75,000 in cost-share assistance to offset costs associated with planting cover crops. Producers will receive $60 per acre for cover crops planted by Tuesday, Oct. 1, and $50 for those planted by Friday, Nov. 15. Producers are encouraged to plant cover crops early to take advantage of the increased funding rate; fields must be located in Sussex County.

Founded in 2023, the new cover crop program will pay $500 to current cover crop participants per referral; new participants will also receive $500. This program will help Delaware reach its water-quality goals of 240,000 acres statewide and SCD’s 2025 goal of 85,000 acres of cover crops in Sussex County.

“Our producers report a significant reduction in input costs after implementing cover crops; they are an effective way to improve soil health,” said Debbie Absher, director of agricultural conservation at SCD. “They also recycle nutrients, build organic matter, provide weed suppression and improve water quality. I encourage all producers to give us a call to learn more about our programs and services; we are here to help.”
