Crew member dies in Navy aircraft crash near Chincoteague

A crew member of a Navy aircraft was killed March 30 after a crash near Wallops Island and Chincoteague, Navy officials said.

A Navy E-2D Hawkeye assigned to an East Coast Airborne Command and Control Squadron crashed about 7:30 p.m., according to a Navy press release. Two crew members were rescued by Maryland State Police and transported to Wallops Island for follow-on medical treatment for nonlife-threatening injuries. A third crew member was found dead in the aircraft, officials said.

The Worcester County Fire Department Dive Team supported the search and recovery of the deceased person. The name of the crew member killed will not be released at this time, pending primary next-of-kin notification. The names of injured crew members will not be released due to privacy concerns.

This incident is under investigation, and updates will be provided as the situation develops.

The E-2 is a twin-engine, five-crew-member, high-wing turboprop aircraft with a 24-foot-diameter radar rotodome attached to the upper fuselage. The Hawkeye provides all-weather airborne early warning, airborne battle management, and command and control functions for the Carrier Strike Group and Joint Force Commander, according to the a Navy website.
