Critically ill, hospitalizations drop to early April levels

The number of patients considered critically ill from COVID-19 dropped to 45 in statistics posted May 17 - the lowest number since April 9. The number of total hospitalizations, 229, dropped to the lowest levels since April 17, when there were 224 hospitalized.

The Delaware Division of Public Health announced four additional fatalities related to COVID-19 with 45 in critical care. The number has not dropped below 50 since April 9 when DPH reported 43 critically ill.

In total, 290 Delawareans have passed away due to complications from COVID-19. Individuals who have died from COVID-19 ranged in age from 21 to 103 years old. Of those who have died, 152 were females and 138 were males. A total of 124 individuals were from New Castle County, 52 were from Kent County, 113 were from Sussex County, and one individual’s county of residence is unknown at this time.

The most recent deaths announced May 17 ranged in age from 48 to 80, two women and two men. Three were New Castle County residents, and one was a Sussex County resident. Three of the individuals had underlying health conditions. Two were residents of long-term care facilities. 

The latest Delaware COVID-19 case statistics cumulatively since March 11, provided as of 6 p.m., Saturday, May 16, include: 

  • 7,670 total positive cases 
  • New Castle County cases: 2,682
  • Kent County cases: 1,197
  • Sussex County cases: 3,739
  • Unknown County: 52
  • Females: 4,201; males: 3,445; unknown: 24
  • Age range: 0 to 103 
  • Currently hospitalized: 229; critically ill: 45; data represents individuals currently hospitalized in a Delaware hospital regardless of residence, and is not cumulative
  • Delawareans recovered: 3,478
  • 33,195 negative cases
