Daniel E. Schooley, innovative educator

Daniel E. Schooley of Frankford, formerly of Michigan and Claymont, passed away surrounded by his family Saturday, July 7, 2018, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes.

Dan was born in Bryn Mawr, Pa., and was raised in Claymont. He was the son of the late Charles and Margaret (Woods) Schooley.

Dan was a graduate of the University of Delaware with a degree in chemical engineering, a graduate of Nebraska University with a degree in business education and a graduate of Oregon with a PhD in statistics.

Mr. Schooley worked with the Michigan Board of Education for 25 years, helping to establish the first charter school in the state with Gov. John Engler. Dan retired in 1997, and counted it an honor to serve the State of Michigan, helping the educational needs of underprivileged children.

He was an avid reader, loved taking yearly trips to Las Vegas and enjoyed bowling and collecting stamps. Dan was also a member of Mariner's Bethel United Methodist Church in Ocean View, and enjoyed attending their Bible studies. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Dan is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Wendy S. (Benjamin) Schooley; two sons, Michael Schooley and his wife Tara of Atlanta, Ga., and Rick Schooley and his fiancée, Fiona McLeod. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Christopher, Kelia, Kaelyn, Alexis, Millie, Sophie, Azalea and Rosalie; and his cousin, Mary Damotto of West Chester, Pa.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
