DAR recognizes Kay Carnahan for community service

September 20, 2019

At the Sept. 14 meeting of the Col. David Hall Chapter National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Kay Carnahan was presented with the 2019 DAR Community Service Award.

Carnahan has served on the all-volunteer, nine-member Lewes Planning Commission since 2001, holding multiple offices.

Starting in November 2018, she began organizing a watershed workshop series to educate the public on the complex interactions of scientific disciplines involved in water management. She built an agenda featuring a range of subject matter experts for the February 2019 event, which was attended by more than 100 members of the public. The event content will be used by Carnahan and fellow commissioners to draft ordinances to protect the health, safety and welfare of Lewes citizens. Newspaper articles, photos, and recommendations to support this award were accepted by the national society.

The newest chapter members were installed at the meeting. They are Jennifer Horsley, Joy Murray and Nancy Nebiker.

Certificates for years of membership were awarded. Nancy Braybrook-Walma, Joanne Brentari, Sharon Robinson and Frances O’Reilly received 10-year certificates. Betty Cassedy and daughter Debra Sheing were recognized for 20 years of service. Nancy Barlow and Trip Wilkinson received 30-year certificates. A 50-year certificate was awarded to Averill Crewe. Barbara Sumereau was recognized for 60 years of service, and Barbara Marshall received a certificate for 75 years of service.

The NSDAR is a service organization for women who are descended from a patriot who served in the American Revolution. The group is dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America's future through education.
