May 30, 2023

The Darby Mowll, RN Nursing Scholarship is being awarded to two Cape Henlopen High School seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence and an interest and passion for becoming a nursing healthcare provider, and have committed to attend a school of nursing or college program in nursing.

This year’s Darby Mowll, RN Nursing Scholarship Award will be presented to Sophia Zych of Lewes and Autumn Larsen Thursday, June 1, during the senior award program at the high school.

The Darby Mowll, RN Nursing Scholarship is named in memory of Darlene “Darby” Mowll RN who provided competent and compassionate care to thousands of patients over the course of a 30-year nursing career in newborn and maternal care, medical and surgical care, and home care. Mowll was one of 11 children in a big Irish family (the McLaughlins) who was only able to go to nursing school because of the financial assistance she received from the nursing school and other benefactors.

Zych wants to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist and will be continuing her education this fall at Louisiana State University. She is a member of the Health Occupation Student Association and in her scholarship application stated that she enjoys helping others in need and has been involved in community service projects.

Larsen stated in her scholarship application that pursuing a nursing degree is a lifelong dream of hers, and she will begin that journey this fall as a nursing student at East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C. Larsen recognizes the growing demand for nurses in the healthcare field and is committed to give back to the community by providing compassionate care to patients and advocating for their needs.

The Darby Mowll, RN Nursing Scholarship team is proud to recognize these two outstanding individuals as they begin their preparation for a career in caring for others – nursing.
