Del Tech counselor Domonique Carter joins Emerging Leaders Program

May 21, 2018

Domonique Carter, an academic counselor at Delaware Technical Community College's Owens Campus in Georgetown, was recently accepted into the National Academic Advising Association Emerging Leaders Program.

NACADA is an international educational association composed of individuals engaged in the work of academic advising. The organization's mission is to promote student success by advancing the field of academic advising globally.

The Emerging Leaders Program was created to encourage members from diverse groups to get involved in leadership opportunities within the organization, outfit participants with the skills and tools necessary to pursue elected and appointed leadership positions, increase the number of leaders from diverse groups, and encourage and assist members of populations who are underrepresented in the association's leadership to attend state, regional, or national conferences. Each year, 10 leaders and 10 mentors are selected for the two-year program in which the leaders and mentors work closely to connect the leaders to areas of the association they are interested in and develop a plan for continued involvement and growth in the association.

Carter, who lives in Wilmington, started working at Delaware Tech in 2005. She became a full-time academic counselor in 2015, and currently serves as the Owens Campus student-athlete advisor and international counselor. She is also an adjunct instructor in the social sciences department and for the Workforce Training and Community Education division.

She has a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Delaware, a master's degree in counseling from West Chester University, and a drug and alcohol counseling certificate from Delaware Tech. She is currently ABD (all but dissertation) at Wilmington University for her doctorate in higher education leadership and innovation.

Carter is a licensed professional counselor for mental health for the State of Delaware. She is also a member of several professional organizations, including the American Counseling Association, the National Board of Certified Counselors, and the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals.

She is also a past presenter at the California Community College Counselors/Advisors Academic Association for Athletics, where she presented on mental health in student-athletes.

At Delaware Tech, Carter is also club advisor of the Vanguard Society and is part of the First Year Experience working group. She was previously a member of the CARE Team and Collegewide Advising Committee.
