Delaware Master Gardeners workshops continue Jan. 26

January 25, 2021

Delaware Master Gardeners announced gardening workshops designed to educate and inspire.

Rebecca Rendeiro will lead Preparing your Landscape for Spring at 12 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 26. Gardens may be asleep for the winter, but the gardener never really sleeps. This workshop will cover important tasks which can be completed during the quieter months of the year.

Judy Pfister will lead a workshop on growing native plants from seed at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 28. Growing native plants from seed is a great way to populate a garden with native plants without breaking the garden budget.  The session will cover native plant pre-germination requirements as well as tips and techniques for both indoor and outdoor seed starting.

Ron Simpson will lead a workshop on growing citrus indoors and on the patio at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 6. He will discuss growing potted citrus plants indoors in winter and outdoors in summer. Topics will include varieties suited for pot culture, fertilization, pruning, pest control and winter versus summer care. There will also be a short discussion on the origins and genetics of commonly grown citrus.

The 4-H Honey Bee Challenge will be the workshop focus at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9.  The honeybee challenge focuses on a critical component–honey bees–to growing food and feeding the world. Approximately one in every three bites people eat is the result of these pollinators at work.

Jack Bruhn will lead a soil pH workshop at 12 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 11, via Zoom. Gardeners learn early that pH is an important soil property. Participants will examine the concepts soil scientists use to explain pH and also consider the many factors that influence how pH changes over time. Also covered will be soil pH measurement, soil test reports, and options for monitoring pH in lawn and garden.
