Delaware Mosquito Control administrator elected president of AMCA
Dr. William H. Meredith, administrator of the Delaware Mosquito Control Section under the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, has been elected president of the American Mosquito Control Association, the foremost professional mosquito control organization in the United States as well as internationally. His term as president, 2011-12, began in March 2011, and follows his service in several other positions on the AMCA Board of Directors over the last 10 years, including Mid-Atlantic regional director from 2002-08. While serving as AMCA president, he will direct or guide many aspects of the association’s activities, ranging from administrative business tasks to policy formulation to promotion of scientific research to interactions with environmental groups, federal regulatory agencies, or congressional staff.
“Being elected president of the AMCA is quite a professional honor and trust responsibility,” Meredith said. “It’s an honor that also reflects the quality of Delaware’s Mosquito Control program and our outstanding staff. Delaware should be extremely proud of the tremendous job that our people do.”
Meredith holds a bachelor of science degree in zoology from Pennsylvania State University, a master’s degree in marine studies focused on estuarine fisheries from the University of Delaware, and a Ph.D. in marine studies focused on estuarine/tide marsh ecology from the University of Delaware. He began his long career in Delaware mosquito control when he joined the staff of the DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife in 1980, working as a biologist, program manager and senior environmental scientist before becoming Mosquito Control administrator in 2000. He’s seen a lot of Delaware’s wetlands.
He received the AMCA’s Meritorious Service Award in 2005 and the AMCA’s Presidential Citation Award in 2008. His professional affiliations include the Mid-Atlantic Mosquito Control Association, New Jersey Mosquito Control Association, Society for Vector Ecology, Society of Wetland Scientists, Association of State Wetland Managers, Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation, and Atlantic Estuarine Research Society, along with serving on the Delaware Governor’s Pesticide Advisory Committee.
Meredith also serves as adjunct faculty for marine biosciences in the University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment, School of Marine Science and Policy (1988-present); and similarly as adjunct faculty for entomology and wildlife ecology in the University of Delaware’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology (2008-present).
