Delaware State Police investigating Sussex Central fight

June 1, 2023

Delaware State Police have charged a 16-year-old girl and a 29-year-old man for their role in a fight at Sussex Central High School’s graduation ceremony May 30.

According to police, at the conclusion of the graduation ceremony, a large crowd of people began fighting outside the main gates. Troopers observed a 48-year-old Millsboro woman being kicked and punched by a 16-year-old girl who was yelling and began walking away from the area. Also involved was a 29-year-old Millsboro man, who police say was punching at people during the fight, including the teenage girl.

Troopers on the scene contacted the girl after she walked across the softball field and began fighting again. Police say officers separated her and spoke with her father but both refused to cooperate with police and left the area. Troopers eventually broke up the fight and the crowd dispersed with no victims remaining to report injuries or eyewitness testimony.

Upon investigation, police identified the Millsboro woman who was seen being kicked and punched, as well as her 15-year-old daughter who had minor injuries to their faces. Through their testimony, police identified the 16-year-old girl and issued a warrant for her arrest on misdemeanor charges of third-degree assault and disorderly conduct. The girl turned herself in to Troop 4 in Georgetown June 1.

The 29-year-old Millsboro man later turned himself in and was charged with misdemeanor offensive touching and disorderly conduct. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on his own recognizance.

Neither of the teenage girls involved in the fight are students at Sussex Central High School.

Police are still investigating the incident and are asking anyone with information or anyone else who was injured during the fight to contact Lt. DiSilvestro at 302-752-3818. Information may also be provided by sending a private Facebook message to the Delaware State Police or calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
