Delaware track & field sprints to end of season

Cape boys’ team second in Division I
May 25, 2023

Track is like wrestling; both are sports with team scores, yet individualized by events, with champions crowned in both. And both sports climb to a crescendo at the end of the season. The meets get bigger and the competition stiffer.

Last weekend at Dover High, the DIAA state championship meet awarded team championships to boys and girls over Division I and Division II.

Salesianum won the D1 boys’ title with 124 points followed by Cape Henlopen with 69, Middletown with 68, Smyrna with 67 and Sussex Central with 59.

A.I. du Pont won the D2 boys’ championship with 106 points followed by Delaware Military Academy with 99, Saint Mark’s with 97.5, Indian River with 48 and Caravel with 44.

The D1 girls’ title was captured by Padua with 187 points followed by Smyrna with 93, Middletown with 83, Polytech with 58.5 and Caesar Rodney with 40.5.

The D2 girls’ title went to Tatnall with 162 points followed by Saint Mark’s with 123, Archmere with 65, Ursuline with 60 and Conrad Schools of Science with 58.

There were 18 events contested over two days, including six in the field — long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put and discus. There were four relays, including the 4-by-100, 4-by-200, 4-by-400 and 4-by-800. There were two hurdle races, the 110 high and 300 intermediates for the boys, and the 100 and 300 meters for the girls.

The shorter sprint races included the open 100, 200 and 400 meters, while the longest distances contested were 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

Each athlete is allowed to compete in a maximum of four events. Points are awarded to the first eight places.
