DelDOT, DSP provide bike-safety checkpoints

Cyclists can get free helmets, lights, repairs at ongoing events near Rehoboth
July 16, 2021

Delaware Department of Transportation officials and Delaware State Police have scheduled additional bicycle-safety checkpoints throughout the summer in the Rehoboth Beach area.

The DelDOT program offered free safety equipment and repairs at checkpoints held June 24 and July 1.

Checkpoints will continue from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursdays, July 22 and 29; and Tuesday, Aug. 3, on Route 1 southbound at the Nike Outlet and Route 1 northbound at the Royal Farms on Holland Glade Road.

All events are free and include bike repairs, tire pressure checks, and seat and handlebar adjustments.

DelDOT bicycle mechanics will be on hand to perform major repairs if necessary and to install bicycle lights for those who need them. Free bicycle helmets will also be available.

“Over the years, DelDOT has partnered with cyclists in Sussex County to help promote bicycle safety for local residents, tourists and the international students who arrive to the beach resort areas as seasonal workers,” said DelDOT Bicycle Coordinator John Fiori. “Transportation in these areas is an issue. Many international students bicycle as their only means of transportation. However, the bicycling customs they are used to can differ from those here in the U.S. These safety checkpoints provide an opportunity to explain the state’s bicycling laws and the rules of the road, and provide safety information.”

All 2020 checkpoints were cancelled due to COVID-19. For Delaware bicycle laws go to deldot.gov/Programs/bike.
