DelDOT project planned for Old Landing Road/Route 1 intersection

Work would lengthen southbound U-turn lane
April 1, 2022

The Delaware Department of Transportation is planning to slightly alter the stretch of Route 1 between Old Landing Road and Rehoboth Mall Boulevard in front of the Walmart shopping center.

The plan is to extend the southbound Route 1 U-turn lane at Old Landing Road and eliminate one of the two northbound Route 1 left-turn lanes at Rehoboth Mall Boulevard.

“The queues in the southbound through lanes are long enough to prohibit vehicles from safely getting into the appropriate U-turn lane to go northbound on Route 1,” said DelDOT Project Manager Mark Whiteside.

The purpose of the project is to improve traffic operations and safety along Route 1 by adding additional storage for southbound Route 1 U-turn movement, Whiteside said.

The U-turn lane would be extended all the way to Rehoboth Mall Boulevard. That extension means only one northbound left-turn lane can remain.

“Traffic data indicates only one turn lane is needed at this intersection to provide adequate storage for vehicles turning into the shopping center,” Whiteside said.

Work will most likely happen at night, Whiteside said. The target is to advertise the project this summer with construction occurring prior to the 2023 summer season.
