There is an old saying, "Putting the cart before the horse.” That is exactly what the Delaware Department of Transportation has done by taking the light out at Route 1 and Route 16.
Once a week, I go to the Lewes Senior Activity Center. Coming from Lewes, I have always crossed over the highway below the Nassau Bridge. Eventually, I began going to the center via Nassau Commons Boulevard due to the speeding vehicles coming over the bridge. Much to my dismay, a few months ago, they decided to replace that road. The only other option for me to go to the center is Minos Conaway Road, which takes me several miles out of my way.
Now, DelDOT is in the process of doing major work on Minos Conaway Road. The senior center is not the only place affected by this problem. The crossing on Route 1 at the bottom of the bridge leads to Janice Road where the Lewes Fire Department, Lewes Senior Activity Center and Whispering Pines community are located. The removal of the light has not only affected this crossing of Route 1, but also Cave Neck Road and Hudson Road. Thanks to DelDOT’s stupidity, our lives are now in danger crossing the highway. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to complete the other projects first before taking the light out at Route 1 and Route 16? Unfortunately, this will not solve the dangerous crossovers for Cave Neck Road and Hudson Road.
Many in the community voiced concerns about the removal of the traffic light at Route 16. Now gridlock has been created going south on the highway between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach.
