Dewey Beach commissioners voted unanimously June 12 to approve a resolution dedicating the Town of Dewey Beach Baywalk to former Mayor TJ Redefer.

Mayor Dale Cooke said the dedication was a great way to honor Redefer for his years of service.

“TJ Redefer, in my mind, was the No. 1 cheerleader for the Town of Dewey Beach,” said Cooke, who served as mayor before and after Redefer. “He did an excellent job as mayor and I would only hope I could come up to those types of standards.”

The baywalk winds around a replenished beach along Rehoboth Bay and is open for public use 365 days a year. It was planned and constructed by Lighthouse Cove Development Company as part of its overall plan to enhance the bayside experience for the Dewey Beach community.

Cooke said the dedication is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, July 28. Redefer served as mayor from September 2017 until his death April 7, 2020.
