Dewey Beach installs AED on Hyatt public baywalk
The Town of Dewey Beach recently installed an automated external defibrillator on the public baywalk at Hyatt Place Dewey Beach.
The AED was donated to the town by Laura Ashby, with the help of Alex Davis from Cardio Partners.
Over the past four years, Ashby has donated about 30 AEDs – one of which was used this summer by a lifeguard to save a person – to the town and its local businesses. The portable devices are used to deliver electric shocks to the heart to restore normal rhythm in people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, significantly increasing their chances of survival.
Ashby lost her son, Dave, a former Dewey resident, to sudden cardiac arrest in 2021. She holds an annual 5K, Dave’s Dewey Dash, in his honor, using the proceeds to purchase AEDs for the town.
