Dewey Goes Pink, chefs' brunch celebrate generosity
There was no time for rain in the Cape Region Oct. 4-5, when storm clouds quickly gave way to absolutely spectacular back-to-back days as summer quietly transitioned into fall.
It began Saturday, when the Starboard in Dewey Beach and the Body Shop in Rehoboth Beach hosted Dewey Goes Pink, a 5K race and 1.5 mile walk to raise money for Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.
The event was launched by the Starboard’s Steve “Monty” Montgomery, who teamed up with Adam Howard of the Body Shop as a way to honor and support their mothers.
Monty’s mom, Barbara ‘Gugie’ Montgomery, succumbed to breast cancer more than three years ago, only after a 25-year fight; Adam’s mom is now battling the disease.
This year, the race sold out with 2,100 participants who proudly wore bright pink shirts all over Dewey and Rehoboth for the entire weekend.
Many were local athletes and families of local breast-cancer patients who point out that Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition uses money raised during the event to help patients and families in the Cape Region as they undergo treatment and recovery.
Following Dewey Goes Pink came the Celebrity Chefs’ Beach Brunch, a gala event at the Rusty Rudder in Dewey, sponsored by Meals on Wheels Delaware. More than 700 people enjoyed breakfast treats, highlighted by plenty of pork-belly specialties. Prepared by chefs and brewmasters representing more than two dozen restaurants and breweries across the Cape Region, the annual brunch raises funds that allow Meals on Wheels to feed thousands of elderly and disabled people across Delaware.
Meals on Wheels volunteers not only deliver daily meals to people who might have difficulty shopping and preparing food, they also offer friendly social contact for residents who may otherwise spend their days in silence.
Congratulations to organizers of both these events, which drew a terrific mix of athletes, families, young people, older people, tourists and plenty of locals to Dewey Beach on a spectacular weekend of camaraderie, generosity, exercise and great food.
