Dewey Lions Club wins Mae Hall-McCabe Award

Since 1951, group serves and supports community
February 18, 2012

The motto of the Dewey Beach Lions Club is "We Serve," and for living up to that motto, the club was given one of the community's most prestigious awards.

The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce has presented the Mae Hall-McCabe Award since 1977 to honor outstanding citizen service to the community.

The Dewey Lions Club was founded in 1951 and has supported hundreds of charities through thousands of hours of community service and fundraisers. The Lions have done everything from chicken barbecues and clam bakes to wrestling cards and horse shows to raise money for their community.

The Lions have contributed supplies or donated money to local organizations, such as the Dewey Beach Patrol, Casa San Francisco, Cape Henlopen Senior Center and Beebe Medical Center, among numerous others.

Award presenter Mike Meoli said, “I was really struck by the level of commitment and sacrifice these men and women offer up on behalf of our community.”

Speaking on behalf of the Dewey Lions’ 105 members, Chris Wilson said what separates the Dewey Lions Club from other service clubs is the diversity of its membership, men and woman in their early 20s to their 80s are all part of the club.

“It’s really an award dedicated to not only the folks that are part of the club today, but going back, as Mike indicated, to the early 1950s, with the members who laid the ground work for this program,” Wilson said. “We’ve had members pour blood, sweat and tears into serving the community, which is our primary goal.”
