Professional and amateur sandcastle builders gathered on Dewey Beach June 15 near the lifesaving station to build the longest sandcastle on the East Coast.
The world record is 17 miles accomplished by the Germans. But it wasn't real beach sand. Last year the Dewey sandcastle reached 65 feet and the attempt to beat the mark brought out some seasoned pros.
The idea behind the castle was to promote family-friendly activities on Dewey Beach.

Dewey Beach Infrastructure member Jim Tyler showed up to measure the castle. He announced “101 feet.”

Event organizers Darrell O’Connor and Marilyn Seitz and many volunteers spent the morning on the beach sculpting sandcastles.
