The Lewes Major League All-Stars began their journey for a state title with a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over Naamans in four innings July 24 in Middletown.
Dodging rain drops, the Lewes bats were hot and pitcher Finn Gannon had ice in his veins. Gannon had the Naamans team off balance all game, scattering just three hits while striking out two. He also helped himself at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
“I felt really good tonight,” said Gannon. “My slider and curve had a lot of control. Then I hit them with the fastball. I was able to keep them off balance and we had a lot of offense to put up the runs. My defense behind me was awesome.”
Lucca Fazio continued to hit the ball, going 2-for-3 with double and five RBIs.
“It feels great,” said Fazio. “It was a real team win right there. I felt the momentum growing all game. It was fun. We can keep it going if we keep the bats going and keep scoring the runs.”
Mason Thompson put the Lewes team on the scoreboard in the second with a single, scoring Ayden Jester, who reached on an error.
Lewes continued to dominate at the dish in the third. After a walk, a single and an error, Gannon connected for an RBI single to score Lewes’ second run. A double by Fazio cleared the bases and gave Lewes a 5-0 lead.
The Lewes bats continued in the bottom of the fourth with hits by Jake Windish, Ben Pease and Gannon loading the bases for Grant Hershelman. Hershelman singled to boost the team to the 10-0 win.
Pease and Mason Thompson also delivered RBIs for Lewes.
“We can coach them, but they have got to play,” said Lewes manager Jerry Windish. “They are doing everything we could ask them to do and more. We’re playing clean, having great at bats, running the bases well and we’ve had excellent pitching all through districts and tonight. The boys keep playing, and we’ll have a shot at it.”
