Dogfish Head mementos acquired for Smithsonian collection

September 21, 2019

Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione announced that the brewery’s innovative spirit and its invention of the process of continual hopping – the brewing method used to make the company’s iconic 60 Minute IPA, 90 Minute IPA and 120 Minute IPA – are being recognized by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.

Dogfish Head’s original boil kettle and continual hopping device – an old-school vibrating football game Calagione picked up at a local thrift store and tweaked for his own purpose – has been acquired and accepted into the permanent collection of home brewing and craft beer history that is being built by the museum’s American Brewing History Initiative.

Calagione said, “My Dogfish Head co-workers and I could not be more proud of this amazing recognition that will stand the test of time, well beyond 60, 90 or even 120 minutes. We are truly honored that the folks at the Smithsonian are allowing us to help preserve the history and heritage of the vibrant, indigenous craft brewing community.”

Calagione also announced that after the recent announcement of Dogfish’s collaboration with Merrell to release a SeaQuench Ale-themed trail runner shoe, the collaborative product was the No. 1-selling shoe on Merrell.com for the first two days of the launch. “That’s right...the No.-1 selling sour beer in America begets the No.-1 selling shoe on Merrell.com,” he said.
