I don't believe we need to read about littering in our state. It is an abomination. It's everywhere. But, I also do not believe it is the responsibility of the state to clean it up.
Having just returned from a wonderful vacation in Europe, I want to share what was one of the most memorable features of traveling Bavaria, Germany, Austria and Hungary. First and foremost, besides all the beautiful cities we visited, there was no trash or litter to be seen anywhere. The highways, the local roads and the cities we visited were spotless. We did not see cleaning crews picking up trash. So I have to assume the citizens of their beautiful countries respect the landscape and their homes and take care of their own litter and trash.
It was evident in the cities there were trash bins and recycle bins everywhere. That was eye-opening experience. They recycle glass, aluminum and plastic. And when I say recycle, they get real money for returning their empties. I believe it was anywhere from a nickel to 8 cents.
Our bus driver had water to sell and was constantly reminding us to return the plastic bottles to him. So it seems to me the problem is our own. Clean up after yourself. Surely you learned this as a child.
Our trip was a cruise on the Danube River. Just like all the countries we traveled inland to see, the beautiful river was spotless. There was no trash, no oil slicks; just another lovely example of how the people care about where they live.
I'm old enough to remember the slogan that came about, back in the '60s – "Don't be a litterbug." Please, clean up after yourselves and others. It will make you feel good and be an example for everyone else.
