Don’t be sad when you can be glad!

November 24, 2019

“The sun did not shine.
It was too wet to play
So we sat in the house
All that cold, cold, wet day.”

- Dr. Seuss

This first verse from Dr. Seuss’s famous book, “The Cat in the Hat,” seems appropriate for those of us wishing for warmth as winter looms ahead. The Cat in the Hat challenges Sally and her brother, “Why do you sit there like that? I know it is wet and the sun is not sunny, but we can have lots of good fun that is funny.”

So this week in the spirit of Thanksgiving, let me tell you my tricks! To make your day brighter and the whole world will be nicer! I am pleased to introduce you to thing one and thing two!

Thing one: Don’t sit in the house if you’d rather not. Go to the Station on Kings. I love it a lot. Emily, the barista, makes pumpkin spice lattes. Sip it and eat carrot cake so divine. Shop for trinkets or cheeses. They even serve wine.

Thing two: Get up from your chair and consider it fair to telephone a friend who lives all alone. Say don’t worry at all. We can still have a ball. To the outlets. To the movies. I won’t let you fall.

Thing one: Play a game. Monopoly. Poker. Dominos. Rummikub too. Invite over neighbors. Do them the favor. Say bring chocolate or ice cream. Popcorn will do. Bring enough for me and enough for you.

Thing two:  Silence your cellphone. Resist words with friends. The thrift shops and soup kitchens are waiting for you. When you help your community, you help yourself too.

Thing one: If staying at home makes you happy indeed, then look for a project. Sewing, baking or fixing a need. Draw pictures galore. Ancestry research. Balance your checkbook and more.

Thing two: Lots of people go hungry. Some don’t have turkeys or trees. Some folks are grieving their friends who are leaving. Missing their loved ones or can’t seem to please.

Thing one: So if you are warm, look inside your heart. For all that you need has been there from the start. Wishing my readers a season of fun. You can choose to be happy without any sun.

Have a wonderful holiday!
