Don’t let partisan politics cloud county council choice

October 1, 2024

The choice for Sussex County Council District 3 this November should not be a choice between Democrat and Republican. The vote for your local council representative does not hinge on national issues such as reproductive rights, immigration or foreign policy. This vote is all about who is best suited to establish policies for the health, safety and welfare of Sussex County residents – the top responsibility cited on the Sussex County Council website for this position.

Each of us who will vote for the District 3 leader should assess who is best suited to serve us locally – not based on your vote for president, governor or senator. In many ways, this vote is more important to your everyday life in Sussex County than those votes. Who will work dynamically to change the codes and regulations that impact development? Who will work effectively to support our schools, address traffic concerns, create affordable housing, protect our forests and grow access to healthcare services?

Are you satisfied with the past and current leadership of Sussex County Council? Based on recent results in Districts 1 and 2 primaries, the answer would be no. Both incumbents, Michael Vincent and Cindy Green, lost their primaries. Voters were not satisfied with their performance. How do you feel about the District 3 incumbent?

Mark Schaeffer, the District 3 incumbent, has not improved our quality of life. Along with Vincent and Green, he has not earned our vote for re-election.

I am supporting Jane Gruenebaum because she will fight for our quality of life in Sussex County. Please visit Jane’s website www.janeforsussex.com and check out what she stands for. One quote from her says it all: “I will prioritize the interests of the people who live here ahead of the interests of people who build here.” Her leadership in founding Sussex Preservation Coalition speaks to her dedication and skill in doing just that.

When you vote this election, you will find the Sussex County Council District 3 choice at the bottom of your ballot. You may be a straight-party ticket voter, but this choice is not about party. It is about the values, positions, effectiveness and integrity of the candidate. Please choose Jane Gruenebaum for Sussex.
