Doodles in Dewey event celebrates 10 years

Fundraiser for Washington D.C.-based Food & Friends
April 24, 2015

Amy Scott knew Dewey Beach was the place to go when she wanted to start a dogs on the beach fundraiser in 2005.

“Dewey does dogs,” said Scott. “It just works there, really.”

She got the idea for creating the annual gathering of golden doodles when she happened to be in town during a greyhound weekend. The dogs and families just love being able to run around on the beach, she said.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, this year’s Doodles in Dewey takes place Saturday, April 25. Scott said the golden doodles will start arriving at the oceanside beach entrance of Saulsbury Street at 9:30 a.m.

Scott is amazed by how much the event has grown.

There were 20 people the first year, she said. Last year there were more than 200.

Scott said as of April 20 there were 165 registrations, with many having two or more in their party. One person has 10 people, said she, so more than 300 people are registered already.

Scott describes the event as a low-key fundraiser for the Washington D.C.-based Food & Friends, which delivers homemade food and nutrition services to those suffering from life-threatening illnesses in the metro area. The event raised $4,680 for the organization in 2014.

Scott, a social worker in Washington, said a former patient of hers who died after a bout with AIDS used the organization in the final months of his life.

It’s really just a good organization and he was a dog lover, she said.

The event takes place rain or shine event. For more information, Scott can be reached at 301-467-5523 or doodlesindewey@gmail.com.
