Delaware songwriter dedicating evening to Larry Walker
October 28, 2015

Delaware native and singer/songwriter Doug James will perform a free concert at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14, at The Music School of Delaware's Wilmington branch concert hall. The concert will feature songs from James' soon-to-be released album, "All Roads." The concert is dedicated to the memory of Larry Walker, a Music School Milford branch faculty member and James' former high school music teacher, who passed away earlier this year.

"Having written songs for the likes of Michael Bolton, Cher, Laura Branigan, Chaka Khan and Dionne Warwick, Doug James is a terrific talent," said Cheri Astolfi, dean of the Music School of Delaware. "We are delighted to welcome him to The Music School of Delaware stage."

James said he is proud to partner with the music school and honor Larry Walker. "Larry Walker epitomized the teacher/pupil relationship and commitment to excellence that The Music School of Delaware offers its students," said James. "I am proud to be partnering with The Music School of Delaware - especially in celebrating the life of my lifelong mentor and dear friend, Larry Lee Walker."

This concert is offered through the music school program The Studio: Rock, Jazz and Folk. Chris Braddock, The Studio department head, said The Studio is offering many new events and programs in contemporary songwriting and performance this year, including Open Mic Nights beginning Thursday, Dec. 10, and special workshops taught by area songwriters. "It's great to kick off these new programs with an artist as accomplished as Doug," he said.

Prior to the free concert, a free songwriting workshop with James will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, featuring four previously selected songwriters who will work with James to develop their original songs. Other attendees will observe the process and have the opportunity to ask questions.

The Music School of Delaware is at 4101 Washington St. in Wilmington. For more information, call 302-762-1132 or go to www.musicschoolofdelaware.org.
