DSP’s 100th Anniversary 5K Run/Walk continues centennial celebration
Dewey went pink to begin the month of October and closed it out with a shade of blue Oct. 29.
A Delaware State Police 100th Anniversary 5K Run/Walk, postponed from September, began and finished on Dagsworthy Avenue with the after-party a tick north at The Starboard. St. Mark’s cross country runner Brandon Smith crossed the line first at 17:34.6 to take home top honors in the men’s open division, while Sussex Academy eighth-grader Paige Ballinger’s 18:48.4 topped all runners in the women’s open division. Pete Rosembert was the first masters division participant to finish, and the Milford cross country team boasted two runners in the top 10 to take home top team honors.
Overall, 233 runners participated in the 5K with a few more people walking one mile in the centennial celebration race. The money raised from the race will benefit Camp Barnes, an overnight residential camp run by DSP that is free to children ages 10 to 13.
Following the race, runners walked and walkers ran down to The Starboard for closing ceremonies and a brunch that featured some delicious, spicy wings. The honorees included Ballinger, Smith, Rosembert, Milford CC and the Delaware Special Olympics Sussex Riptide team. All participants in the run/walk received T-shirts, and Milford was given a 100th-anniversary flag.
