Dylan Smiley smashes the field at the Gary Lister 10-Miler

The 43rd Annual Gary P. Lister Bottle & Cork 10-Miler and 5K Run/Walk took place Sept. 7 in Dewey Beach. One of Delaware's oldest road races, the 10-mile course starts in Dewey Beach and heads to Rehoboth. This year, 225 runners finished the race.

Dylan Smiley of West Chester, Pa., took first place in the 10-miler with a 51:40.4 time, besting the second-place finisher by more than six minutes. Denise Knickman of Baltimore took top female honors with a time of 1:08.0.

Taking first in the 5K was Mike Durkin of Newark with a 16:19.1. Bailey Davin of Newark placed first in the female division with a 20:07.8.

Some proceeds from the race benefit the Sussex Consortium.

Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
