E-bikes should not be allowed on trails

September 12, 2025

Dave Todaro’s letter to the editor in the Sept. 4 issue is spot-on about e-bike riders on the trails, but I want to take it one step further.

As 30-year residents of Lewes, my wife and I have enjoyed riding the trails. We appreciate the trails and the state park. Refreshing to see government do something worthwhile.

As a former skier (on your right and on your left) and a longtime biker, it is just common courtesy to warn people ahead of you that you’re about to pass. Not with a bell or horn, but a shout-out.

I don’t believe electric bikes, especially throttled ones, should be allowed on the trails. The trails were never intended for e-bikes or, for that matter, road bikes. They were for walkers and casual bikers.

My wife and I have not been able to enjoy the trails in the last couple of years because it is unsafe because of e-bikes and the people who do not adhere to the common courtesy of warning fellow users of the trails.

I too have nothing against e-bikes except that they are overwhelming the trails. E-bikes are motor scooters!

I am 81 years old and still pedal my bike. It is good exercise. As I look around, I feel we could all use more exercise.
