Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students recently competed at the Eagle’s Nest Christian Academy annual science fair. Among submissions were projects on using wind power to generate electricity, maximizing production of tomatoes using different fertilizers, testing the effectiveness of different stain removers, and exploring possible physical benefits of playing video games.
Projects were judged based on the student’s use of the scientific method, the display of information, neatness, originality and an oral presentation. Students were graded in both science and English classes, integrating writing and information gathering with the actual experimenting.
The Best in Show Award was presented to eighth-grader Cameron Burns for his project involving drag on boats. To lessen the drag, Burns built and tested different boat models to rate them on speed and agility.
Other winners were:
• Sixth grade: Samantha Frederick, first place; Collin Birl, second place; and Matthew Garbrick, third place
• Seventh grade: Mark Davis, first place; Diana Kempf, second place; and Julia Shoemaker, third place
• Eighth grade: Austin Jones, first place; Brennen Bledsoe, second place; Taylor Phillips, third place.
