East Coast Garden Center spring classes to start Feb. 6

East Coast Garden Center announced its kickoff to spring 2021 class series will begin at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 6, and run weekly through Saturday, March 27, with in-person sessions at the garden center.

Each class is $10. Class setup ensures proper social distancing; masks are required.

Each class is an independent stand-alone, but customers can opt to attend several classes. The series is designed to help customers make successful plant selection decisions, increase their plant and product knowledge, and ensure proper planting and care of their plant investments.

Each one-hour class will include presentations and examples for hands-on plant familiarization, showing the customers specific plants and varieties.

The Right Plant/Right Place class set for 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Feb. 6 covers how to make the best plant decisions for one’s home landscape. It also provides an overview of the entire series. Maximum class size is 12.

In Seed Planting Feb. 13, attendees will learn the fundamentals of planting with seeds. The class will cover both seed starting indoors and direct sowing. Participants will learn about seed germination times, seed offerings and easy-use starting trays available at the garden center. It’s inexpensive and fun to watch the growing process.

Spring Preparation class Feb. 20 will show attendees how to get a jump on preparation activities essential to a successful spring garden and landscape. Participants will learn soil fundamentals and preparation techniques, and review a checklist of activities vital to a thriving garden and landscape.

House-scaping with House Plants on Feb. 27 will show how to ward off the winter doldrums by increasing greenery in one’s home. Environmental and health benefits of plants will be reviewed along with their aesthetic attributes. Attendees will receive information on a wide variety of plants plus the products and growing conditions essential to their health.

In the Pollinator Gardens class March 6, students will learn all about successful pollinator gardening. This class will focus on the value of specific pollinators and the wide selection of plants effective for attracting them to one’s yard.

Privacy Screens is set for March 13. Privacy is often an issue with newer homes being built in Sussex County. Customer will explore both standard choices and some more unique options for privacy screens, as well as selections for both the landscape and containers for smaller patio and courtyard environments.

Bird-scaping class March 20 will show how attracting birds to the yard often goes hand in hand with a love of gardening. Class will cover critical elements for successful bird-scaping including food, shelter and water. Attendees will learn about plants and products that can transform a yard into a bird-friendly haven.

Top Pick Annuals and Perennials March 27 wraps up the series. Attendees will hear the center’s recommendations for a beautiful and successful landscape.
